TROMBONE LESSONS

at NOLA School of Music

Trombones are the only brass instrument to use a slide mechanism to change the pitch by expanding the length of the instrument. This gives them the unique ability to slide between pitches.

The trombone is most commonly featured in jazz & R&B music, brass bands, orchestral music, and marching bands.

The trombone is considered one of the 4 "core" brass instruments, which include the trumpet, the trombone, the french horn, and the tuba. There are many other brass instruments like euphonium, cornet, and sousaphone that are used in orchestral and band music.

Learning a trombone can be physically challenging for young children. In order to be able to play the trombone, the child's arm must be long enough to operate the slide. See our F.A.Q. section below for our advice for younger students.

F.A.Q.

about trombone lessons at NOLA School of Music

WILL I NEED TO BUY A TROMBONE?

Yes. We do not provide instruments for our students to take home, so you will need to purchase or rent a trombone.

If you don't have your trombone yet, don't worry! We recommend coming in for your first lesson before you buy an instrument, so our teacher can help you know what to look for and where to shop.

WHAT IS A GOOD AGE TO START LEARNING THE TROMBONE?

The answer will largely depend on your child's arm length. Unlike string instruments like violin, there are not smaller sizes of trombones made for children. Students with shorter arms may have difficult fully extending the slide on the full-sized trombone, which will limit their ability to play all of the notes. We recommend students under the age of 7 meet with our trombone teacher to try out the instrument and we'll help you decide whether it will be possible for them to learn the trombone.

If we do decide your child is too young, our teacher may choose to begin with general music lessons (which will include piano, singing, and music theory) and transition to the trombone as they get older. Knowing how to read music and having a little experience playing an instrument will give your child a HUGE head start when they start to learn the trombone!

Alternatively, young students may choose to learn a similar instrument (like the trumpet) that doesn't require long arms.

WHICH BRASS INSTRUMENT IS THE EASIEST TO LEARN?

It depends. For some students, making a sound on a smaller mouthpiece (like the trumpet) will come more naturally to them, but for others, a larger mouthpiece like the trombone will be easier. If you're undecided about which instrument you'd like to learn, your teacher will help you figure out the best brass instrument for you based on your physical features.

For a young student, there may be some physical limitations to consider: a larger instrument like the tuba will difficult (or impossible!) for a child to hold and a trombone requires a longer arm to be able to extend the slide completely.

LESSON OPTIONS

LESSON OPTIONS

30-MINUTE LESSONS

30-minute lessons are our most popular option at NOLA School of Music. They are ideal for beginners and children who don't have enough material (or the attention span) for a longer lesson.

60-MINUTE LESSONS

60-minute weekly lessons are great for adults or intermediate/advanced students. An hour lesson gives your teacher plenty of time to focus on technique, sight-reading, improvisation, and other aspects of music without being rushed.

45-MINUTE LESSONS

For many students, 45-minute weekly lessons are the perfect sweet spot. Since 45-minute lessons are difficult to schedule, they may only be available during early afternoon hours or late evening.
