FRENCH HORN LESSONS

at NOLA School of Music

The French Horn is known for its cool, mellow tones. The horn tends to sound more muted and less abrasive than the other instruments in the brass family.

French Horn (often called "horn") is one of the 4 "core" brass instruments, which include trumpet, the trombone, the french horn, and the tuba.

French horn players hold their hand in the bell of the instrument and use the position of their hand to raise or lower the pitch.

French horn is a transposing instrument, which means it is tuned to a key other than C. Most french horns are in the key of F.

F.A.Q.

about french horn lessons at NOLA School of Music

WILL I NEED TO BUY A FRENCH HORN?

Yes. We do not provide instruments for our students to take home, so you will need to purchase or rent a french horn.

If you don't have your horn yet, don't worry! We actually recommend coming in for your first lesson before you buy an instrument, so our teacher can help you know what to look for and where to shop.

IS MY CHILD OLD ENOUGH FOR FRENCH HORN LESSONS?

Unlike string instruments like violin, there are not smaller sizes of french horns made for children. Because of this, some younger children may have difficulty playing the french horn because of their arm length or other physical limitations. 6-7 is typically a good age to start.

If your child is too young to start on a the french horn, your teacher will have your child start out on piano, learning the basics of music and then transition them to the french horn when they grow into it. Knowing how to read music and having a little experience playing music will give your child a HUGE head start when they start to learn a brass instrument!

WHICH BRASS INSTRUMENT IS THE EASIEST TO LEARN?

It depends. For some students, making a sound on a smaller mouthpiece (like the trumpet) will come more naturally to them, but for others, a larger mouthpiece like the trombone will be easier. If you're undecided about which instrument you'd like to learn, your teacher will help you figure out the best brass instrument for you based on your physical features.

For a young students (8 or younger), we recommend starting out on the trumpet or the french horn. A larger instrument like the tuba will difficult (or impossible!) for a child to hold and a trombone requires a longer arm to be able to extend the slide completely.

60-MINUTE LESSONS

45-MINUTE LESSONS

For many students, 45-minute weekly lessons are the perfect sweet spot. Since 45-minute lessons are difficult to schedule, they may only be available during early afternoon hours or late evening.
