The harmonica (also called the mouth organ or french harp), is a reed instrument often used in blues, folk, jazz, and country music.
The harmonica has mouthpiece comprised of multiple reeds or holes. Unlike most reed instruments, harmonica players create sound by blowing air in and out of the instrument (by both exhaling and inhaling).
Though are many types of harmonicas (diatonic, chromatic, tremolo, and orchestral), the diatonic harmonica is the most common type of harmonica, and is what most of our students are interested in learning.
Diatonic harmonicas are made in 12 different keys, but beginner harmonica players will only need a C harmonica to get started.
Yes, you'll need to have an instrument to practice on in between lessons. Fortunately harmonicas are one of the most inexpensive instruments out there!
DO YOU TEACH ADULTS?
Yes! A huge portion of our student base is adults looking to re-learn an instrument or learn a new instrument!
At NOLA School of Music, we believe you CAN teach an old dog new tricks — and adults are great students because they can grasp technique and music theory concepts much better than young children. So even if you're starting out from scratch as an adult, with a little bit of practice, you'll progress quickly!
IS MY CHILD OLD ENOUGH FOR HARMONICA LESSONS?
Because of its size and simplicity, harmonica is a great instrument for young students to start out on. Children can start learning the harmonica as young as age 4.
SHOULD I PURCHASE A SET OF 12 HARMONICAS?
It depends what your goals are. If you're just getting started, we recommend purchasing a C harmonica. Once you learn the basics on one harmonica, it's easy to transfer those skills over to a harmonica in a different key.
If you're interested in playing with a band, or want to play specific songs in the key that they were written, you may want to consider purchasing a set of harmonicas.

30-MINUTE LESSONS
30-minute lessons are our most popular option at NOLA School of Music. They are ideal for beginners and children who don't have enough material (or the attention span) for a longer lesson.
60-MINUTE LESSONS
60-minute weekly lessons are great for adults or intermediate/advanced students. An hour lesson gives your teacher plenty of time to focus on technique, sight-reading, improvisation, and other aspects of music without being rushed.
45-MINUTE LESSONS
For many students, 45-minute weekly lessons are the perfect sweet spot. Since 45-minute lessons are difficult to schedule, they may only be available during early afternoon hours or late evening.
