Learning music theory involves analyzing the melody, harmony, rhythm, and form of music. No matter what instrument you play, having an understanding of music theory will help you learn music faster, sight read better, and interpret music better.
Analyzing the melody and harmony of music involves learning about different "keys" in music, meaning different sets of notes that composers use when writing a piece.
Analyzing the rhythm of music involves the time signatures (how many beats are in each measure) and the note values (the length of each notes).
Many people simply think of scales, keys, and chord progressions when they think of music theory, but understanding the form (the overall structure) of a piece is also an important part of music theory.
DO I NEED TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT TO LEARN MUSIC THEORY?
WILL YOU HELP ME PREPARE FOR AN AUDITION OR EXAM?
Absolutely! Many of our students choose to study music theory in preparation for college auditions or a musicianship exam.
If you are taking lessons in order to prepare for an exam, let your teacher know and they will help you study all the aspects of music theory you may need to know.
DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO READ MUSIC?
Nope! Beginning music theory lessons will focus mostly on practicing reading music and identifying notes on the staff. If you have no experience reading music, these lessons will be a great starting place for you!
If you already read music, your teacher will start you out with more complex topics, such as identifying key signatures and scales.
30-minute lessons are our most popular option at NOLA School of Music. They are ideal for beginners and children who don't have enough material (or the attention span) for a longer lesson.
60-minute weekly lessons are great for adults or intermediate/advanced students. An hour lesson gives your teacher plenty of time to focus on technique, sight-reading, improvisation, and other aspects of music without being rushed.
For many students, 45-minute weekly lessons are the perfect sweet spot. Since 45-minute lessons are difficult to schedule, they may only be available during early afternoon hours or late evening.
